CAMERTON BATCH

HISTORY

This is an impressive reserve. It started life as a slag heap from the coal mining era 200 years ago. Planted with mixed broadleafs in the 80’s with disbelief that anything could grow on such harsh waste ground. Nature has proved us wrong and today the picture is very different- it is now rich with flora as a result. With a mix of non-intervention management & traditional woodland techniques, its biodiversity is now rich and varied, supporting insects and some rare species, including the greater and lesser horseshoe bats. We use an approach of non-intervention and practical forestry practices to promote structural diversity within the woodland. This involves annual rotation of coppice comp; woodland edge/ ride maintenance and seasonal grass cutting to provide a varied habitat for wildlife and an area for the public to enjoy recreationally.

UPCOMING EVENTS:

Wednesday, October 13: A group of volunteers will be carrying out woodland management activities at Camerton Batch LNR. The day will be led by BTCV (British Trust for Conservation Volunteers) who will provide tools and basic training – no previous experience is necessary. This is an opportunity to have some fresh air, take some gentle exercise, meet people and have a go at woodland management. Come along for all or part of the day; everyone is welcome. Bring a packed lunch, suitable weatherproof outdoor clothing and footwear – there are steep and muddy paths in places.

Please meet at the miner at the site entrance at 10.30am. For more
